12 Hjälmare kanal

Completed in 1639, the Hjälmare Canal with its 9 locks, is Sweden's oldest man made waterway. The first stage was built between the Hyndevadsån and the Eskilstunaån ( the Hjälmarens natural outflow into Lake Mälaren). This original canal was completed in 1620 , but success was short-lived as the canal was destroyed by the Hjälmarens repeated floodings. About ten years later the more successful, present day canal was begun.

The Hjälmare Canal flows out into the Arbogaån River. Our tour runs from Arboga to the town of Stora Sundby found beside Lake Hjälmaren. It is a tour of around 30 km, of which 13 km are on the canal itself, and can be considered easy, even taking into account the several lifts required.
