12 Hjälmare kanal
Completed in 1639, the Hjälmare Canal with its 9 locks, is Sweden's oldest man made waterway. The first stage was built between the Hyndevadsån and the Eskilstunaån ( the Hjälmarens natural outflow into Lake Mälaren). This original canal was completed in 1620 , but success was short-lived as the canal was destroyed by the Hjälmarens repeated floodings. About ten years later the more successful, present day canal was begun. |
