Paddle in Västergötland

Canoeing in Västergötland, Sweden
The province of Västergötland offers many different kinds of canoeing waters. The Göta Canal together with the Trollhätte Canal joins the East coast with the West coast. This is a popular route especially for pleasure-boating. A couple of stages, those with fewer or no locks (and portages), are also ideal for the paddler.

In the wilderness areas Fegen and Vättlefjäll (just outside Gothenburg) there are many beautiful lakes that are surrounded by woodland. Otherwise it is the many rivers and streams that are the main attraction for canoeists in Västergötland. The longest rivers are the Tidan and the Ätran.

Västergötland has only a little edge of coastline around Gothenburg, but still offers nice opportunities for sea-kayaking on lake Vänern, where there are both free horizons and some nice small archipelagos.
